Service Process

When you say "within the hour" — how accurate is that really, and what makes a job run longer?
Year, make, and model determine everything. Some vehicles take 16 minutes from security system access to a working key. Others take longer depending on what the job actually involves — cutting a mechanical key, programming a transponder, or working through a push-to-start system. There's no universal time frame, but the overwhelming majority of jobs are completed within an hour.
What happens from the moment you pull up to a vehicle?
First, we verify ownership. Once that's established, we unlock the vehicle if it's locked, then cut and program the key. That sequence doesn't change.
What do you need from the customer before you arrive?
Accurate information — that's the most important thing. We need to know what you drive and whether the vehicle has a push-to-start or a keyed ignition. Those two pieces determine what equipment and key stock we bring to the job.
Can you program a key when there's no working key at all?
Yes. That's actually the majority of what we do. A working key is not required.
How long does the actual programming take once you're set up?
It's year, make, and model specific — there's no single answer. What we can say is that the full job, including programming, is typically done within an hour.
What happens if programming fails? Does that ever happen?
It does happen. There are several causes we run into regularly. Swapped modules are common — if components of the vehicle's computer system have been replaced, that can interfere with programming. Failing PCMs on older Fords are a good example of that. No power to the transceiver ring or the OBDII port will also stop programming cold — those are electrical issues we have to identify and address first. And if someone has attempted to bypass their immobilizer system, that can render the vehicle unprogrammable. That bypass attempt never works and frequently turns the vehicle into a paperweight — it's not something to try. When we encounter any of these, we identify the underlying issue and walk the customer through the options before proceeding.
Do you cut keys on-site or carry pre-cut stock?
We cut on-site. Every key profile is specific to the individual vehicle — like a fingerprint. There is a way to cut a key by VIN without having the vehicle in front of us, but that's rarely the right approach. Cutting on-site against the actual vehicle is the reliable method.

Proof of Ownership

Why do you require proof of ownership, and what do you accept?
We require it to confirm you own the vehicle and to make sure we're not working on stolen property. It may feel like a formality, but consider it from the other direction: you wouldn't want a service company making a key to your vehicle if it had been stolen and was sitting somewhere unrecovered. The verification protects everyone. We accept a title, a bill of sale, or a government-issued ID matching the registered owner.
What happens if someone can't prove ownership?
We can't make the key. No exceptions.

Pricing & Value

Why are your prices what they are compared to a dealership?
Our overhead is significantly lower. No large facility, no large staff, no dealership infrastructure. That cost difference gets passed directly to the customer.
What's included in the quoted price — any surprises on the invoice?
No surprises. What we quote on the phone is what you pay. There are variables that can change scope once we're on-site — a swapped ignition, an unexpected modification, something the customer didn't know about the vehicle — and when that happens we communicate it before proceeding, not after. As long as the right questions get asked upfront, we know exactly what we're walking into.
Why do some vehicles cost significantly more than others?
This industry has a lot of variables, and pricing reflects that. Older Toyotas and Lexus vehicles — roughly 1997 to 2005 — require pulling the computer from the vehicle and flashing it before it can accept new keys. That's substantially more labor than a standard job. Many newer vehicles require manufacturer-level programming software — the same software the dealership uses — and that software carries a per-vehicle cost. In many cases it's the only way to program correctly. Those are two common factors, but the real answer is that every vehicle has its own profile, and the price reflects what the job actually requires.
Why use Patriot Auto Keys instead of going to the dealership?
The dealership requires your vehicle to be there. If you have no working key, that means a tow — which costs money, takes time to arrange, and adds hours to a problem you're already dealing with. We come to your vehicle. At your home, your workplace, wherever it is. No tow, no waiting room, no dropping your vehicle off and waiting for a callback from the service department. On the capability side, there's no gap. We use the same manufacturer-level programming software that dealerships use — that's what the NASTF Vehicle Security Professional credential authorizes. The keys we program work the same way, because they're programmed the same way. Cost runs slightly lower on our end, primarily because our overhead is a fraction of what a dealership carries. But the bigger advantage is time and convenience. For the majority of vehicles, we're done within an hour of arriving. For vehicles that require pre-coded keys sourced through the manufacturer, there will be lead time regardless of who does the work — dealer or otherwise. The difference is we'll tell you that upfront, manage the sourcing, and come to you when everything is ready. Same result. No tow. We come to you.

Credentials & Trust

What is NASTF VSP and why does it matter?
NASTF VSP — Vehicle Security Professional — is the credential that grants access to manufacturer-level programming software. It's the same authorization dealerships operate under. Without it, certain newer vehicles simply can't be programmed by an independent service company. It's what separates companies that can handle modern vehicles from those that can't.
What's the background — how did Patriot get started in automotive key work?
We've been in locksmithing since 1998 — general locksmithing first, then automotive. Once we started working on the automotive side of the trade, that became the focus and never stopped. The complexity, the technology, the pace at which vehicles change — it's a discipline that rewards specialization.
Why start Patriot Auto Keys as its own dedicated business?
There was a clear gap in the market. There was no one to refer automotive work to when a vehicle needed European programming or manufacturer-level software. The goal was to close that gap — to be the resource that didn't exist for other locksmiths, dealers, and customers who kept hitting dead ends.
What can you do that a general locksmith can't?
Locksmithing covers a lot of ground — safe work, door hardware, access control, CCTV, automotive. You can't be an expert in all of it. By focusing exclusively on automotive, we go deeper into the latest programming technology, the make-specific requirements, and the manufacturer software that general locksmiths don't have access to. We don't split attention across other trades. That focus is the difference.

Make-Specific

Toyota and Lexus — what's different about those jobs?
The older vehicles — roughly 1997 to 2005 — require pulling the computer and flashing it before new keys can be programmed. That's additional labor that most other makes don't require. Beyond that, Toyota and Lexus work within normal parameters. Every manufacturer has its own characteristics; that one just has a specific labor step on the older models.
Ford and Lincoln push-to-start — what should customers know?
2021 and newer Ford and Lincoln vehicles generally require manufacturer-level software to program. We have that access.
GM vehicles — Chevy, GMC, Cadillac, Buick — anything notable?
Truck and SUV platforms, roughly 2021 and up, also require dealer-level software. Same situation as Ford. We're equipped for it.
Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep — any notes?
Newer Stellantis vehicles — generally 2017 and up with a secure gateway module — require WiTECH 2.0, Stellantis's dealer-level software. The newest platforms go further: they require a validated high-level pass-through device to communicate with the vehicle at all. The older hardware simply won't connect. We run WiTECH 2.0 and have the required hardware, so these aren't vehicles we have to turn away.
Honda and Acura — anything to know?
Honda ignitions from roughly 2002 to 2012 have a well-documented failure problem. If the key stops turning, the ignition itself has likely failed — not the key. The symptom is a key that won't turn rather than one that's lost or damaged. We repair those ignitions.
European makes — BMW, Mercedes, Audi, VW — why are these different?
The immobilizer systems work differently. On most vehicles, the security system lives in one module. On European makes, it's distributed across multiple modules throughout the vehicle. That architecture makes programming more complex and more variable. Many of these require manufacturer-level software, and on newer models the keys often have to be ordered through the dealership because they come pre-coded with the vehicle's information already embedded at the factory.
Nissan and Infiniti — any notes?
The 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue push-to-start has a well-documented BCM vulnerability that every technician working on these needs to know about. Certain BCM part numbers on those vehicles can be permanently damaged during the key programming sequence — specifically when all keys are deleted at the start of the process, the BCM can go into a sleep state it doesn't recover from. The result is a bricked module that requires a new BCM, ECM, and steering lock. Nissan issued service documentation warning their own dealer technicians about this — it happens with aftermarket tools and dealer tools alike. No tool is immune. We check the BCM part number before touching a Rogue in that range. If it's an affected unit, we'll tell you what you're dealing with before we start.
Hyundai and Kia — any notes?
Key costs on the newer models are unusually high. In some cases the only source is the dealership. We'll tell you upfront when that's the situation rather than quote something we can't deliver.
Which makes are the most complex?
European makes, consistently. The distributed immobilizer architecture — security spread across multiple modules — creates more variables than domestic or Japanese vehicles. More things that have to be right before programming can succeed.
Which makes genuinely require the dealer?
Mercedes-Benz 2014 and up, for the most part, has to go through Mercedes. That's a current industry-wide limitation — no independent service company has a full solution for it yet. We'll tell you honestly when a job falls into that category rather than take your money on work we can't complete.

Push-to-Start & Smart Keys

What's the real difference between a transponder key and a push-to-start system?
A transponder key goes into the ignition and turns. A push-to-start key stays in your pocket — the vehicle detects it through proximity and you start the car with a button on the dash. Both require programming to work. The mechanism is different; the need for programming is the same.
Why can't someone just buy a key fob online and have it work?
Because the key has to be paired to the vehicle's computer. Without that programming step, the car won't recognize it. If keys worked straight out of the package, anyone could order the right blank and start any matching vehicle. The programming is what ties a specific key to a specific car.
Make-specific push-to-start quirks you run into regularly?
One we see fairly often: aftermarket beauty rings installed around the push-to-start button. They're decorative trim pieces, but if they're metal or the wrong thickness, they can block the proximity signal between the key fob and the vehicle. The car won't start, and it's not obvious why. We've had quite a few calls for exactly that over the years.

Fleet & Auction

What is auction key work and why does it matter to the buyer?
Speed determines value. An auction lot can have 20 vehicles that need keys made in a single day — each one different, each one needing to be ready before it goes to the block. A vehicle that crosses the block without keys leaves money on the table — the price drops by far more than the key would have cost. Getting those cars ready quickly, and getting them right, directly affects the sale price. That's the service.
What's different about fleet and commercial work versus a standard consumer call?
Volume and variety. You have to move fast and be prepared for anything — a 2002 Chevy Silverado and a 2024 Wagoneer on the same lot, same day. That requires carrying broad key stock and being able to switch between platforms without losing time on each vehicle.
Why do auction yards need a specialist rather than a general locksmith?
Speed, versatility, and access to manufacturer-level software for the modern vehicles coming through the lot. A general locksmith can handle straightforward cut keys, but push-to-start vehicles and newer platforms that require manufacturer software need someone who does this specifically — and does it fast.

Common Questions

What should I do if I lose my only car key?
Get multiple quotes, and get specific ones. Don't settle on the first service company that tells you it has to go to the dealer — that's often not accurate. When you're calling around, make sure whoever quotes you gives you a firm number upfront. "Starting at" prices and answers like "the technician will decide once he gets there" are red flags. A reputable company can give you a definite price once they know the year, make, model, and whether the vehicle is push-to-start or keyed ignition. That's all the information needed to quote the job accurately.
Is it safe to buy a replacement key fob online?
Sometimes. Amazon is generally more reliable than eBay, but that still doesn't guarantee the key will program — we've seen plenty of Amazon keys that don't. The cheapest option is rarely the right one. We've arrived at jobs where the key shell was completely empty: no chip, no electronics, just a piece of plastic. If the price is too good to be true, it usually is. A key that doesn't program isn't a deal — it's a wasted service call.
What's the difference between key programming and key cutting?
Key cutting shapes the mechanical blade — the part that physically opens the door lock or fits the ignition barrel. Key programming ties the electronic component to the vehicle's computer so the car will recognize the key and start. Push-to-start vehicles have an emergency blade built into the fob for situations where the battery dies; that blade gets cut to the specific vehicle. The fob itself still gets programmed separately. In most cases, both steps need to happen, and both have to be right.
Can a locksmith program a key, or do I have to go to the dealer?
With very few exceptions, there's always a solution outside the dealership. The one we currently can't fully work around is Mercedes-Benz 2014 and up — and that's an industry-wide limitation right now, not something specific to any one shop. For virtually everything else, don't accept "dealer only" as a final answer without getting a second opinion. That phrase gets used too loosely, and it costs people time and money they don't need to spend.
