Do I need a new key or an ignition repair?
On Honda and Acura vehicles, it is often both. Many owners think the key is the problem, but the key and the parts inside the ignition wear down together. A new key by itself will not fix a worn ignition.
Why won't my Honda or Acura key turn?
Honda ignitions are known for wearing out. The key gets hard to turn one day, and the problem gets worse over the next few days. It can also happen all at once.
Inside the lock are small parts called wafers. They wear down until they can no longer seat properly, and then the lock will not turn. The same lock design is used across the Honda line, including the Accord, Civic, CR-V, Element, Fit, Odyssey, Pilot and Ridgeline. Acura uses it too, so Acura owners see the same failure.
We replace the worn wafers and cut a new key back to the original factory specifications. This is the simplest fix and the one that costs the least. Your ignition and your door locks stay matched, so one key still works both.
How much does Honda ignition repair cost?
Ignition repair is $395 within 20 miles of Oklahoma City. Past 20 miles, travel is $3 per mile, up to 60 miles out.
That price covers normal wear. If the ignition is physically broken, or the vehicle needs factory software to finish the job, we will quote it before we start.
The dealer typically charges more than double.
The repair includes one basic transponder key, programmed to your vehicle.

Can I replace a Honda ignition myself?
You can, and it costs more in the end. The do-it-yourself fix is a new ignition housing and cylinder. That new ignition comes with a new key, and the new key will not open your door. It also has to be programmed before it will start the vehicle, so you still pay for a service call.
Some replacement Honda and Acura ignitions come with a key that has remote buttons. You can program the buttons yourself, but not the chip inside the key that starts the vehicle. The programming instructions can be misleading, and many owners think the whole key is programmed when only the buttons are. A locksmith still has to program the chip before the vehicle will start.
If your Honda cranks but will not start and the green key is flashing, read why the buttons work but the car won't start.
Where is the repair done, and how long does it take?
A technician comes to your vehicle. Plan on about two hours.
